Episode 1 is here: Discerning God's Will

It's a little bittersweet...

Hey friend,

This week marks the start of the final series on the podcast — four episodes I'm calling Discerning God's Will: Wayfinding to the Good Life.

My discernment process for this next season as a church planter came straight from this same process. I can attest to the fact that God can transform our desires and decisions in His will, because this new chapter isn't one that I saw coming--and honestly, didn't think it would every happen. With this big change, I'm also saying goodbye to many other projects--including the podcast.

So this last series felt important to get right. It's not a wrap-up. It's the exact thing my husband Dave and I have been walking through together as we made this decision, drawing on scripture and the saints to show us the way.

New episodes drop every Monday, starting today. I'd love for you to walk through this last series with me.

We're starting with longing.

Before we can ever ask "what should I do," I think we have to back up and ask a harder question first: what do I actually want? Not the surface-level answer — the promotion, the relationship, the way out of the pain you're in. Underneath that. Psalm 37:4 says take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. But so often our desires are too small, or too tangled up in fear, for us to even recognize what we're really longing for.

So today, before you do anything else — just ask. What do I want? And then ask again: what's the desire under that desire?

I put together a free companion guide to walk alongside this series — a page for each week with scripture, reflection questions, and a simple practice, so you're not just listening, you're actually bringing your own decision to God as we go.

If you've got a decision sitting in front of you right now, I hope this series meets you right where you are.

A couple of other things, while I have you:

This fall, I'm hosting vo/ca retreats — three days on the North Carolina coast for women who are used to being the one with the answers, ready to set that down for a little while. Small groups, real conversation, space to hear from God about what's next. [Get priority access here → vocaretreats.com]

And if you'd like more of my writing, I share reflections most weeks on Substack — [nicoleunice1.substack.com → ]

Grace and peace,

The path was mostly gravel; we could see the parking lot nearly the whole distance; and as soon as we entered the "forest" we were subject to merciless dive-bombing but all manner of black flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. But I had insisted that we had to get out into nature before arriving at our destination, and I had found the "hike" on a map, and I...

May hits us like a freight train. And it's a freight train barreling out of control toward our souls, filled with complicated things like Mother's Day, birthdays, end of school hooplas, teacher appreciation, graduations, awards assemblies and all the other life stuff that keeps life-ing us while...

So much of our perspective is shaped by our own story. What we embrace, what we reject, what we believe are a response to the good or a reaction to the bad that we ourselves have experienced in life. One of the great shaping influences in my own life is being the middle-big sister to two brothers--my brother Matt, 14 months younger--and my brother Steve, who joined our family in 1983, when I was seven and he was a toddler. He was adopted into our military family, the beloved caboose in our...
